Attendance
It is the parent's responsibility to call school when your child will be absent.
Regular attendance will ensure that your child is getting the maximum benefit out of your school.
Your child is responsible for being in class by 0800 unless he/she is:
 
* Ill or not feeling well.
* Has a medical appointment which was unable to be scheduled before or after the school day.
If your child arrives late, but before 0830, a signed and dated note explaining the reason for being tardy is required.
If your child arrives after 0830, their parent/legal guardian must check them into school.
Students arriving after 0830 are required to bring a home lunch that day. AAFES hot lunches cannot be ordered after 0830.
Three unexcused tardies in one quarter will result in lunch/recess detention.
We believe that children learn in ways other than textbooks. One of these ways is by family trips. The experiences a child receives from travel abroad will last a lifetime and cannot be duplicated in the classroom. We encourage parents to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. If you decide to take a family trip, please let your child's teacher know at least one week in advance so that the work can be given to take on the trip. This will assist your chid so that he/she does not fall behind in class work.

Books and Supplies
School supplies may be purchased at the Hainerberg PX. Over the summer, a list of school supplies is available at the Customer Service Desk. During the school year, a list is available in the school office.

During the course of the year, some school supplies will need to be replenished.

Ensure that all supplies are marked with the student's name.
Textbooks and workbooks are the property of DoDDS but are loaned to students for their use.
Sponsors are responsible for the replacement of textbooks, workbooks, library books, science equipment, audio/visual aids, computer materials, or other school property if they become lost or damaged.
Clearance forms cannot be signed until all items are returned or replaced.

Computer Usage
Aukamm promotes the use of computers in all classrooms and across the curriculum.
Students and parents must review the "DoDEA Computer and Internet Access Agreement for Students" and sign the agreement form.

Discipline
We believe that Aukamm Elementary School children are one of the best groups of children. Occasionally, however, a student might break one of the school rules. If this occurs, we will handle the situation swiftly.
Consequences include:
 
Step 1 One on one discussion with the child and the teacher and/or principal
Discussing the violation and ways to prevent future occurrences.
Step 2

After school detention will be arranged by the principal and monitored by the Counselor or other designated school official. A Parent Notification will be sent home prior to the detention. This form must be signed by the parent and returned to the Main Office.

Step 3 Suspension from school. Only the principal administers this and student disciplinary records determine the length of suspension.
Note Sometimes a student's behavior will warrant that Step 1 and even Step 2 is bypassed when the infraction merits stiffer punishment.
Aukamm has a "Zero Tolerance" policy for weapons.
 
* Please remind your child that weapons, replicas of weapons, or other items that can be used as weapons are prohibited at our school. Also, remind them that if they assist someone or know of someone who has a weapon and don't report it to a school official, they can also receive a severe punishment.
* The penalties are severe, and a warning may not be given beforehand if they bring weapons or have them in school.
* Violation of this policy will result to Step 3, immediate suspension.
* In addition, the military police will be immediately contacted to conduct an investigation and take necessary action. Reference LWJ-3754.
* USAFE Rec. 125-17 and USAREUR Reg. 190-6 list weapons in detail. Examples include, but are not limited to: any firearms, guns, silencers, or mufflers; destructive weapons that shoot; any type of knives; club-type hand weapons (blackjacks, sling shots, brass knuckles, nunchaks); gas pistols; shooting pens; straight razor, razor blades, or any weapon made of a razor blade;, ice pick; daggers; bolo knives; machete; swords; spears; bows, cross bows, clubs, or objects used to inflict bodily harm; pieces of wood, stones, bricks, or pipe; toys that have the appearance of being real weapons; any object that might be used to inflict bodily harm such as broken bottles, bicycle chains, lighters, or laser pens.

* This policy is designed for the safety of all persons at Aukamm Elementary School. Please support us in helping keep this a safe learning environment.
Corporal punishment is defined as intentional use of physical force upon a student for any alleged offense or behavior, thoughts, or attitudes of a student. Corporal punishment is not practiced or condoned in DoDEA. Permission to administer corporal punishment will not be sought or accepted from any parent, guardian, or school official.

Dress Standards
Student dress and personal grooming are the responsibility of the parents.
Clothing should be comfortable, but also present a neat appearance.
Unacceptable clothing includes:
 
* Clothing with offensive words or obscene pictures
* Short-shorts, halter tops, see through tops, and T-shirts designed as underclothing
* High heels, long skirts, long shoe strings, pants/shorts that are oversized. These are considered to be unsafe in a school setting and are not permitted
* Bandanas or sweatbands are not permitted.
During the winter season children should have raincoats, hats, umbrellas, mittens or gloves, a warm jacket or coat, hat or scarf, and sturdy shoes and/or boots. Cloth shoes become wet and cold and are not appropriate in the winter. Boots worn all day make the feet perspire and become cold when the child goes outside. Children will be allowed to leave house shoes or cloth shoes at school and change into them during the course of the day. Hats or other headgear will not be worn inside during school hours.

Emergency Contact Information
Inform the school if your emergency contact information changes. During registration you were asked to provide the school with home, work, and emergency contact numbers. These numbers will often change during the school year.
Inform the school if you will be in the field or traveling and have left your child in someone else's care. A note providing their name, home unit, duty phone, quarter's address, as well as a copy of the Medical Power of Attorney must be sent to the school office.

Homework
Homework is assigned:
 
* To reinforce or extend skills taught in the classroom.
* To encourage each student to share a reasonable and appropriate degree of responsibility for his/her education according to his/her developmental level.
* To develop good lifelong study habits.
* To provide the opportunity for parent/child interaction.
* To provide parents with samples of student tasks as another means of fostering home/school partnership.
This school defines the parent's role in homework as:
 
* To create an environment for daily study time which will help in the development of good study habits: a quiet place to work, the necessary materials such as paper, pencil, scissors, paste, etc.
* To emphasize the value of the student's work by showing interest through direct involvement or by simply discussing topics of assignment.
* To offer encouragement and praise for the student's effort, for improved performance, and for exceptional work.
* To monitor when assignments are given and when they are completed.
* To assist the student as needed without doing the task for them.
* Providing feedback to the teacher on difficulties encountered and other signs of frustration such as taking excessive amounts of time to complete an assignment.
A good or effective homework assignment is one, which is relevant to ongoing classroom instruction and is provided at the discretion of the teacher. Homework may be related to one subject under study or may involve a skill that crosses subject lines. Since student abilities and needs are considered in the daily classroom program, the same consideration will be extended to any homework assigned.
For grades 1-5, homework will not generally be assigned more than four times a week with tasks that should usually take no longer than 30 minutes. In the kindergarten program, students may be asked to perform some activity at home that should last no more that ten minutes and will generally necessitate parent involvement.
Normally, specialists as a rule do not assign homework. However, they encourage students to practice skills and concepts taught in the classroom. Furthermore, students are encouraged to use local resources to reinforce and enrich concepts and skills presented in the classroom environment. Examples include: visits to museums, sporting events, concerts, and other involvement in the Host Nation community.
For special education students, IEP goals developed by the teacher and parent provide a guideline for parents to continue the instructional program in the home setting. A list of hands-on activities may be presented to the parents, which serves to reinforce the IEP goals and objectives.
As appropriate to the nature of the assignment, teachers evaluate and return homework assignments to students and periodically inform both students and parents of the student's performance and completion of homework.

Lost and Found
Any items found should be turned into the main office.
Clothing items and lunch boxes will be placed in the cabinet near the teachers' mailboxes.
Items of value such as purses, glasses, or jewelry will be held in the main office.
Items unable to be identified and not claimed by the end of the year will be donated to a needy cause (e.g., orphanage or other organization) by the principal.
Please ensure your child's items are clearly labeled so that they can be returned to him/her in the event that they are misplaced. It is recommended that parents sew name tags on clothing items to assist us in returning items lost.

Money and Valuables
Money and valuables should not be brought to school unless requested by the teacher for field trips, book club orders, or other school activities.
CD's, cassette players, cell phones and electronic games are not allowed due to potential loss issues.
Bicycles should not be ridden to school, as there are no facilities to secure them.
The school will not be held accountable for lost valuables brought to school, but we will assist you in every way to locate lost items.
Please be sure that your child's full name is on every article he/she brings to school, including glasses and watches.

School Cancellations
The decision to delay school is made by the Wiesbaden BSB Commander based on information gathered by the military police.
If there are dangerous road conditions (ice or snow), failure of heating, electrical, or plumbing, school may be delayed for two hours or canceled altogether.
Any decision is immediately relayed to AFN by military authorities. Late opening or cancellation is usually announced on AFN Radio: FM 98.7 and AM 873 before 0600 and at least twice between 0600 and 0700. The USAREUR weather, road condition, and school closure site (external site) also lists and updates this information.
Any cancellation for military/civilian personnel or bus transportation automatically applies to Aukamm Elementary School.
Early closing will most likely be announced on AFN. It is absolutely essential that each family designate an alternate destination for their child if the parent is not home in case of early closure or for any other reason. The BSB Commander or designee is responsible to inform units of school closure.

School Parties
Four regular parties are authorized during the school year: Halloween/Fall Harvest, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and End of School Year.
Most children like to include their classmates in birthday parties. You may wish to bring refreshments to school to celebrate your child's birthday. Please coordinate this with your child's teacher prior to the event.

School Rules
School rules are presented and discussed in class by the teachers. Parents are also urged to discuss the school rules with their children. It is especially important that children understand why these rules are needed. It is in the children's best interest that the school and home have a partnership that works together to provide a school environment which promotes the learning of academic and social skills.
Teachers at each grade level may have other classroom rules. You will be notified of the rules near the beginning of the school year. It is important that parents go over these rules with their children, placing an emphasis on the understanding of these rules.
In the school and on school grounds you need to:
 
* Use behavior that shows respect for the learning of others
* Obey and respect all school adults promptly
* Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself
* Behave in ways that protect yourself and others from danger or injury
* Show pride in your school environment with respect for the personal property of others.
In the bathroom you need to:
 
* Keep your bathroom clean and neat
* Flush toilets after use
* Wash your hands
* Use quiet voices
On the playground you need to:
 
* Play safely. Rocks, sticks, snow, and sand stay on the ground and are never thrown. Fighting, play-fighting, and rough games are never allowed.
* Use playground equipment properly, and use only designated areas.
* Respect the rights of others by keeping hands, feet, and ugly words to yourself.
* Stay on the playground during your scheduled time and alert the playground monitor if you need to leave the playground (e.g., to go home for lunch or to the nurse).
* Place lunch boxes in the classroom box. Pick up and throw away any litter you see on the school grounds.
* Line up quickly and quietly when the bell or whistle sounds.

School Supplies
Students are expected to have the necessary school supplies. DoDDS-Europe has created an official list.

School Year

Students are scheduled for 183 days of classroom instruction.

The maximum number of duty days for teachers is 190 days.
The 7 non-instructional days are used for record keeping days and in-service training days to better improve the quality of education we provide.
Additional days will be used to conduct parent/teacher conferences at the end of the first quarter and during the third quarter.

Student Placement Committee
A teacher can submit a pre-referral to the Student Placement Committee (SPC) when they feel a grade placement change is in the best interest of a student.
Parents, teachers, and the Placement Committee Members meet and share information.
If the grade placement is warranted, the SPC submits a recommendation with the documentation to the principal for final approval.

Student Progress
Student progress will be assessed, by the teacher, at the end of each quarter.
Report cards will be sent home and a parent/legal guardian will be required to sign the envelope acknowledging receipt of the progress report.
Parent conferences and Parent/Student Share Days will be scheduled in fall and winter respectively. These are listed on the school calendar.
If you have a concern or wish to discuss your child's progress outside of the scheduled conferences, please feel free to contact your child's teacher. Conferences will be held after instructional time, on a one-to-one basis to ensure confidentiality.

Study Trips
Study trips are conducted to enhance the education program and are therefore considered an extension of the classroom. School rules apply during these study trips.
In an effort to ensure our student's safety during study trips, we often request parent volunteers to accompany the group. The purpose of the parent volunteers accompanying the class is to ensure that the same standards of student supervision and safety can be maintained while away from school.
School study trips are for students in the designated group going on the trip. Study trips are directly related to curricular learning. It is inappropriate for parents or teachers to bring along other children, even if they are of school age.

Telephone Usage and Messages
School phones are for official business.
Students are not permitted to use the school phones to call home for forgotten homework, requests to stay after school, or requests to go to a friends house after school.
Students are allowed to call home if they have forgotten their lunch.
Emergency messages for students may be called in to the office and every effort will be made to get the message to your child. However, with limited clerical staff this can be done with only true emergencies.

Transfer and Withdrawal
PCS orders are required for students transferring or withdrawing to "hand carry" school records.
Please allow 10 working days after receipt of orders to prepare school records for transport. Records may only be picked up by the parent/legal guardian.
If a child is withdrawing or transferring without orders, school records cannot be hand carried. The receiving school must request records.
A child may be promoted to the next grade twenty days prior to the last day of school. If a student withdraws prior to the twenty days, the receiving school will make the promotion decision.

Transportation
All students living in Aukamm Village walk to school.
All students who have been granted an "Exception to Feeder Policy" are responsible for their own transportation. Transportation is not provided to them.

Visitors
For the safety and security of our children and staff, all visitors are required to stop at the
office prior to visiting a classroom.
You will be asked to sign in and receive a visitor's badge.
All visitors must wear the badge clearly visible.
Security personnel are instructed to direct all persons without a visitors pass to the office.
We want you as parent and volunteers to feel welcome in our school, but we must also prevent unauthorized entry.
