DoDEA Accreditation
* Aukamm Elementary is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA-CASI) (external sites).
* Information for parents (external site) is available at the NCA-CASI website.
* An NCA team visits schools every five years. Accreditation is based on specific standards.
* The NCA Accreditation Team last visited Aukamm in February 2008.

Aukamm's School Improvement Plan
* Goal #1 : All students will improve their non-fiction writing skills across the curriculum.
* The "Essence" of the goal is for students to:

*
Focus on non-fiction writing skills.
*
Use RAFTS (Role, Audience, Format, Topic, Strong Verb).
*
Apply content material.
* Two"Interventions" will be used to help all students improve their non-fiction writing skills.

* Write one good paragraph using the writing process.
* Write with a purpose, using RAFTS and a variety of formats.
* Publish student work (at school, on the website, in newsletters).
* Goal #2: All students will improve problem solving skills across the curriculum.
* The "Essence" of the goal is for students to:

*
Study the Problem. What is the problem?
*
Organize the Facts. What are the facts?
*
Line Up a Strategy. What is your strategy?
*
Verify Your Plan and Answer. What is your answer? Is it reasonable?
*
Explain Your Answer. How did you solve the problem?
* Two"Interventions" will be used to help all students improve their problem solving skills:

* Model thinking for problem solving. Teachers will orally model their thinking in order to solve problems. Students will also explain their thinking in how to solve problems such as with "convince me" activities.
* Problem Solver. Selected strategies from the math series, "The Problem Solver", will be used. These strategies teach students how to solve problems, step by step.

Test Data
* All DoDEA students in grades 3-11 are annually administered the TerraNova, The Second Edition, a standardized test of basic skills published by CTB/McGraw-Hill.
*

Terra Nova scores are reported in percentiles, not percentages. A percentile compares one student's scores against the scores of all other students who took the test. For example, a score at the 70th percentile means that that student scored as well or better than 70 percent of all others who took the test. The national average is always the 50th percentile.
