Wiesbaden
A Brief History of Wiesbaden

The Romans settled in Wiesbaden about 2000 years ago and benefited from its 26 hot
springs. They named their site the "Acquae Mattiacorum", or the "Springs of the Mattiaci" after the local tribe.

"Wisibada", the "Spa in the Meadows", was first mentioned in the 9th century.
*
The House of Nassau owned the city from the 13th century on.
*
In 1806 Wiesbaden became the seat of government for the Duchy of Nassau.
*
Wiesbaden's reputation as a spa time began in the mid 19th century.
*
Wiesbaden became the capital of Hesse in 1946.
   
Wiesbaden Today

Wiesbaden, which continues to be known as a spa town, is inhabited by over 270,00 residents.
*
Located at the foot of the Taunus Mountains and near the Rhine River, Wiesbaden is also known as the "Gateway to the Rheingau" - an area known for its vineyards.
*
Wiesbaden has many cultural events, fests, restaurants, and shops.
*
Wiesbaden's train station is connected to the ICE (Inter City Express) train. It is also connected to the autobahn and is approximately 20 miles west of the Frankfurt Flughafen (airport).
   
Climate and Weather

Wiesbaden and the Rheingau enjoy a temperate climate. Summers are mild with periods of hotter temperatures, and winters are cool with some frost/snow. Rain falls throughout the year.

Newspapers and Magazines

Wiesbaden has two daily newspapers - the "Wiesbadener Kurier" (external site) and the "Wiesbadener Tagblatt" (external site).

The American paper, "The Herald Union" (external site), is published biweekly and includes news and events from around the U.S. Army Garrison Hessen.
